PTFE Foil

 EnviroESCA sample plate with PTFE foil

A piece of PTFE (Teflon) on an EnviroESCA sample plate. Carbon tape was used to fix the foil to the holder. The sample was analysed without any pretreatment, drying, or cleaning procedure.

After evacuating the Sample Environment to 1*10-5mbar a survey spectrum was measured. The Fluor 1s Peak is clearly observable but shifted to higher binding energies.

When the sample is kept under vacuum conditions over a longer period with continously impinging x-ray photons the F 1s peak shows the well known shift to higher binding energies as the sample charges up.

But with EnviroESCA it is possible to measure the surface under environmental conditions. In the above graph one can see the influence of different pressures of ambient air on the spectra. The gas molecules above the surface under investigation will be ionized and will lead to an Environmental Charge Compensation which is clearly visible by the shift and the narrowing of the F 1s peak. The decrease of the intensity at higher pressures is due to the fact that more emitted electrons will be absorbed in the gas atmosphere between the sample surface and the analyzer nozzle.
