PET Foil

 EnviroESCA sample plate with PET foil

A piece of PET on an EnviroESCA sample plate. Carbon tape was used to fix the foil to the holder. The sample was analysed without any pretreatment, drying, or cleaning procedure.

After evacuating the Sample Environment to 1*10-5mbar a survey spectrum was measured. The spectrum is clearly shifted to higher binding energies due to charge up effects.

With EnviroESCA it is possible to measure the surface under environmental conditions. In the above diagramm one can see the influence of different pressures of ambient air on the spectra. The gas molecules above the surface under investigation will be ionized and will lead to an Environmental Charge Compensation which is clearly visible by the shift and the narrowing of the C 1s peak. The decrease of the intensity at higher pressures is due to the fact that more emitted electrons will be absorbed in the gas atmosphere between the sample surface and the analyzer nozzle.

When measured with a lower pass energy the peak structure inside the C 1s peak is revealed. The three different peaks contributing to the C 1s originate from electrons of different bound carbon atoms inside the molecule.
